Brazil says it expects to buy the same amount of diesel from Russia

Brazil’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that the country wants to buy as much diesel fuel as possible from Russia, with which an agreement is being finalized to purchase this type of fuel at a lower price.

Asked about this during a visit to the UN, Carlos França said that Brazil, like other countries, is looking for “safe and reliable” suppliers of diesel fuel at a time when there are certain problems with processing and in order to ensure that that farming and drivers have enough fuel.

“Of course, Russia is a major supplier of oil and gas. You can ask Germany about it, you can ask Europe about it,” the minister told reporters.

When asked about the amount of diesel fuel that the Brazilian government expects to purchase from Russia, France replied: “As much as we can.”

Also, when asked about buying fuel from a country that invades another (Ukraine) in violation of the UN Charter, the minister simply said: “Maybe you should ask Mr. Scholz about this, and then I will answer,” referring to the German chancellor. , whose country is heavily dependent on Russian energy imports.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday that Brazil had “nearly closed” a deal to buy cheaper diesel fuel from Russia, which is under heavy economic sanctions from the West over a war in Ukraine that Brazil has not joined.

“When I went to Russia (last February) I was buying fertilizer for agribusiness and now the deal is almost closed for us to buy cheaper diesel in Russia,” he told a group of supporters near his official residence in Brazil.

With the outbreak of war in Ukraine on February 24, Brazil’s leader takes a “balanced” stance on the Russian military intervention and criticizes the economic sanctions imposed by the West against the government of Vladimir Putin.
