The decision is already final. “I was pretty confused at the time,” said the 35-year-old in court, but didn’t want to give any further information.
Man is still considered dangerous
The psychiatric expert Siegfried Schranz considers the man to be so dangerous that, according to his report, without a placement in the prison, “crimes with serious consequences, such as serious bodily harm resulting in death or even murder, are to be feared with high probability”. A week after the incident, the 35-year-old was still “confused and derealized.” The man had previously been hospitalized several times and was also cared for by the psychosocial service. However, he was not aware of the illness. Again and again he stopped the treatments prematurely, took his medication irregularly or not at all. He only left the hospital shortly before the attack because he allegedly had to take care of his dripping thermal bath.
Nightmare began for family
At 4:40 a.m. on February 15, he broke into the family home because he wanted something to eat. A nightmare began for the mother and her two children. “I left the light on in the living room, assuming that there would be no break-in where the light was on,” reported the 42-year-old to the chair of the jury, Claudia Zöllner. When she was awakened by the smashing window, the woman initially thought the cat had thrown something down. “But the noise was so intense and constant, I knew immediately someone was there. It sounded like a elephant in a china shop.” The woman alerted the police, who advised her to go into hiding. With her nine-year-old son by the hand, she tried to get to the lockable bathroom, on the way she wanted to get her daughter from the next room. But suddenly the intruder stood in front of her, knife raised.
The woman offered him money and hoped he would then leave the house. Instead, the man stabbed the woman about 20 times. Despite severe injuries, she was able to get back into the bedroom with the boy, where she fought a bitter fight with the 35-year-old, because he repeatedly stabbed through a gap in the door. “He didn’t say a word,” said the woman, and the intruder didn’t show any reaction either. “He was like a robot.” The facial expression was pale and the eyes did not focus. At some point she stopped screaming and “said to him almost like a mother, now the police are coming, you have to run away”. Only then did the man let go of the woman and leave the house. He was arrested a little later at a nearby property. The mother and her children hid in the attic until the police arrived.
Children still need psychological treatment
The children remained physically unharmed, but like their mother, they are being treated for the massive psychological consequences. “It changed the family a lot,” said the 42-year-old. Regarding the offer from the 35-year-old’s parents to send the woman 3,000 euros to compensate for the damage, the woman said: “It would be better if the parents put the money into their son’s therapy.”
The 35-year-old’s lawyer, Manfred Arbacher-Stöger, said his client no longer knew why and why he did it. “He can’t remember,” said the defender. “It’s the most horrible thing I could have done to the family,” said the victim. According to the medical expert Wolfgang Denk, the woman had suffered six injuries, some of them life-threatening. At the time of the crime, however, the ability to exercise discretion and disposition was no longer available, and due to his lack of sanity, the 35-year-old was not to be accused of the offense – attempted murder.
