Headphones #93: Once in Mexico and back

You can rely on Calexico. It’s been like that forever. Almost a quarter of a century ago, when Messrs. Joey Burns and John Convertino made the decision to form a band, they quickly made it clear that there is an inherent magic to the power of acoustic instruments that is very difficult to resist.

Of course, this was not only due to the choice of instruments, but also to Calexico’s style, which was always broad. Mexican mariachi, desert rock, folk, country, Latin American jazz – the band’s music has always had a breath of fresh air.

Calexico’s music has always been able to banish dark clouds with a few bars of music. Anyone who heard their songs felt better quickly, began to dance a little and at some point had this feeling that the world couldn’t be that bad.

Their tenth album “El Mirador” (City Slang) certainly doesn’t come at the wrong time. At a time when there are problems in so many corners, the mood is in the basement because the prices of life are skyrocketing and there are more and more worrying developments, it is worth escaping the permanently bad news effectively. Headphones on, “El Mirador” on, close your eyes and let yourself drift.

The title song is right at the beginning, in the typical Calexico sound, which easily creates space in the auditory and mental center. The rhythm of the wonderfully laid-back Cumbia Peninsula takes you through areas where the vastness is emblematic, after which there’s no harm in looking further than the end of your nose. “El Paso” sounds like you’re sitting around the campfire with the men to hear stories, and “The El Burro Song” feels like you’re in some small town in Mexico partying with Calexico.

“El Mirador” is full of wonderful songs that are ideal as “holiday audio reading” because you can so grandiosely fall into the Calexico world – and indulge your own thoughts. And who absorbs the instrumental “Turquoise” will feel how intense music can be in its acoustic form.
