A 47-year-old had been working with a handsaw when sparks flew and set the outbuilding on fire. The farm owner’s son-in-law tried to fight the flames with two fire extinguishers.
burns and smoke inhalation
However, he could not prevent the fire from spreading. During the attempt to extinguish the fire, the man suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation. The emergency services of the called fire brigades were able to free the man from the burning building and he was taken to the Sisters of Mercy hospital in Ried im Innkreis.
“The big challenge at the beginning was making sure that we didn’t run out of extinguishing water,” says Christoph Schaschinger. As commander of FF Andorf, he led the operation, in which a total of 13 fire brigades were involved.
The outbuilding was engulfed in flames
In the first phase, firefighters used water from pools on site to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby apartment building. The extinguishing work, which was still going on as of Thursday evening, was difficult, according to Commander Schaschinger. The extinguishing water had to be brought 1.5 kilometers to the scene.
Since new sources of fire kept appearing, the emergency services had to open the wooden structure of the stable in the evening hours. According to Schaschinger, the outbuilding was probably completely destroyed by the fire.
