A two-year-old child was orphaned after losing both parents in a shooting that took place last Monday at the Independence Day parade in Highland Park, near Chicago. The boy’s parents, Irina and Kevin McCarthy, 35 and 37, are among seven killed in the attack.
according to Mirror, Aiden separated from his parents in the midst of the chaos. As a result, the child emerged from the shelling safe and sound and was handed over to family members.
Members of the North Shore community who were present at the time of the attack began fundraising on the GoFoundMe platform. The goal is to raise a sum to help the family take care of the boy.
“After the July 4th Highland Park shooting, the people of the North Shore came together to help a boy we knew nothing about. We brought him to safety under tragic circumstances, gathered to find his grandparents, and we prayed for the safety of their family,” wrote Irina Colon, the organizer of the fundraiser.
Over two million euros have been raised so far, according to GoFoundMe.
According to authorities, Robert E. Crimo opened fire on a crowd that was present at the parade and he managed to escape disguised as a woman and mingled with the fleeing people. The man was arrested a few hours after the attack.
