According to the Upper Austrian police, the arrested person is a 60-year-old Kosovar who lives in Germany. He is suspected of having shot a 32-year-old man during an altercation in front of an amusement arcade in Burghausen’s Lindach industrial park. Passers-by fled to safety, the shooter fled in a car. Despite rapid emergency medical care, any help came too late for the victim, and the man died at the scene of the crime.
The police searched with a large contingent for the perpetrator. Several checkpoints and roadblocks were set up. According to the information, 80 emergency services from the fire brigade were also on site, for example to illuminate the crime scene. In the course of a large-scale cross-border manhunt, the suspect’s car was sighted at night in the “Inn-Salzach Blick” area in the Innviertel region. At around 1.30 a.m. the wanted person was caught by the Cobra in Überackern (Braunau district) after a service dog had picked up his scent. The man had hidden himself in a steep embankment. A helicopter and police drones were also involved in the search.
“The quick and successful access to the alleged perpetrator from Germany is proof of the professional cross-border cooperation of the police.
But it also shows the successful networking between the rapid intervention groups introduced in autumn 2021 and the Cobra task force in dealing with high-risk operations,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.
