Children’s books should touch, amuse or convey a nice message. But they are often translated from English or written with expressions common in Germany. “My boy and I read a lot about ‘mud puddles’, ‘paws’ or ‘piglets’ – I would probably never say that,” says Stefanie Schwarz. The copywriter from Bad Goisern therefore became active herself: “The problem is not that there are not enough children’s books. The problem is that there isn’t one in our dialect yet,” says Schwarz. Together with illustrator Wolfgang Menschhorn, the 34-year-old brought out the book “Da kloa Stritzi. Abenteuer ausm Salzkammergut”.
“Da kloa Stritzi” tells the story of a lovable rascal (likely called “Stritzi” in Upper Austria) and his cat Minki. Together they experience adventures and learn from each other. In the dialect of the Salzkammergut. “Minki complains, for example, that they don’t hike any further likes and says ‘Mi gfreits neama'”, says the author.
Schwarz also got inspiration for the stories and the dialect words from older people in the region. “Many were really happy that some expressions make it into a children’s book these days. A lot of things are gradually forgotten.” So that this does not happen so quickly, readers will find a translation for all words written in italics at the end of the book. “Our dialect is unique and special. We should never have to be ashamed of that. Especially not in front of our own children,” Schwarz is convinced.
“There, kloa Stritzi. Adventures from the Salzkammergut” appears in A5 format, with hardcover on 48 pages. The book costs 16.99 euros and can be ordered at www.schwarzaufweiß.xyz or by email to steffi-schwarz@gmx.at. It is also available in some shops in the Salzkammergut.
