For months, the construction of the five-storey “Medicus” block at the exit of the Steyrer Hanggarage on Dukartstraße has been accompanied by sometimes heated discussions. The building, based on the plans of the Vorarlberg star architect Bernhard Marte, with its striking, pointed windows, was seen by many as a sacred new building because of its oriental appearance. The rumor of a new “mosque” in the center of Steyr quickly made the rounds. City politicians were also overwhelmed with corresponding inquiries, as were investor Leopold Födermayr and the Steyr editorial team of OÖN.
However, the construction of the “Medicus” square, which doctors and a bandagist will move into after completion, is the starting signal for a comprehensive redesign along Dukartstrasse. The next projects at the train station and at the former post office are already being planned.
The roof topping of the “Medicus” was celebrated after six months of construction. Leopold Födermayr is investing around four million euros here. Four of the five floors are already taken. The first tenants are expected to move in in December. The building was erected by Mayr Bau from prefabricated elements that protrude by ten centimeters on each floor. Stephan Mayr: “It was a difficult construction site due to the limited space, but we managed everything without an accident.”
