New study: This is the maximum amount of alcohol under 40s should drink

Even drinking more than one small glass of beer a day can endanger your health, writes an international research team in the journal The Lancet. They recommend an alcohol consumption of two tablespoons of wine or 100 milliliters of beer per day for women under the age of 40. Men under 40 should drink even less.

The researchers recommend no more than one shot glass (40 ml) full of beer or two teaspoons of wine per day for men. For those over 40, however, a drink or two could help prevent heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

“Our message is simple: Young people shouldn’t drink, but older people could benefit from small amounts,” said co-author Emmanuela Gakidou of the University of Washington. “While it may be unrealistic for young adults to stop drinking, we believe it is important to share the latest evidence so everyone can make informed decisions about their health.”

The researchers examined the risk of alcohol consumption for 22 different health outcomes, including injuries, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The basis was the large-scale project Global Burden of Disease (translated: Global Burden of Disease), which systematically collects data on health worldwide.
