Monkeypox: Vaccination recommendation only for risk groups

Accordingly, the sting is only recommended for certain risk groups, such as laboratory workers and people who have come into direct contact with the virus. Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases in Austria has increased further – to 83 compared to 62 in the previous week.

The NIG recommends vaccination against smallpox as post-exposure prophylaxis after contact with a sick person, for specialized laboratory staff and for health workers with a high risk of exposure. Depending on the availability, people with individual risk behavior could also be offered a vaccination as a result. According to the NIG, risky behavior occurs when people have frequent, alternating sexual contact.

Homosexual men particularly affected

In Austria, men with same-sex partners are currently particularly affected by monkeypox, according to the Ministry of Health. Vaccination of the general population was not recommended due to the epidemiology, the course of infection and the low probability of infection.
