the president rejected Draghi’s resignation

Draghi resigned after the rejection of one of the forces of the ruling coalition, the Five Star Movement (M5S), to give him the “vote of confidence” in the legislature. They didn’t vote against it, but they didn’t support it either.

The senators of the M5S left the Upper House to not vote on the motion regarding a decree with aid worth 26,000 million euros to mitigate the effects of inflation, withdrawing their support for the head of the Government, who despite everything exceeded the motion of confidence with 172 votes in favor and 39 against. “I want to announce that tonight I will present my resignation in the hands of the President of the Republic,” Draghi said at a Cabinet meeting, according to the text released by the premier’s office.

“The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, received at the Quirinale Palace the President of the Council of Ministers, Prof. Mario Draghi, who resigned from the government he resided in,” reported a statement from the Italian presidency at 8:00 p.m. local time. “The President of the Republic did not accept the resignation and invited the President of the Council to appear before Parliament to make communications, in order to take stock of the situation that has arisen as a result of the results of the session held in the Senate”, added the message.

The government headed by Draghi until yesterday -and still formally headed- was number 67 in just 75 years of existence of the Republic.

Despite Mattarella’s moral request, “the decision has been made,” say the prime minister’s collaborators, who will appear in Parliament on Wednesday to explain the “profound reasons” that led to an election that seems defined. First is the trip to Algeria. Then the communications in Parliament, where the President of the Council is expected to announce his resignation and he will have to return to the Quirinale – the palace that is the seat of the Presidency – to formally resign, which was already blocked yesterday.

Then, it will be up to Mattarella to decide whether to grant a new assignment or fall into the scenario that seems more concrete with each passing hour, according to parliamentary circles, which is to dissolve the Chambers and go to early elections.

There is talk of a tense conversation, at times even rude, between Mattarella and Draghi. But, despite his emphasis on the Chigi Palace, another time to reflect and negotiate emerges. The Democratic Party thinks that with Draghi at the head, the government can be restarted. The political fabric burns. Forza Italia seems to support the possibility of a government even without the 5 Star Movement, on which, even in the reading of the (far right) League, all responsibility for the summer crisis falls. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio warns at night that “without Draghi we will fall into darkness.”
