“The safety level is very high – although there are outliers downwards, overall one can be satisfied with the efforts of the manufacturers to make their vehicles even safer,” says ÖAMTC expert Max Lang. “It is particularly gratifying that cars in a wide variety of categories and price ranges are now achieving good to very good results. Fortunately, the days when safety was also a question of price seem to be numbered.”
Alfa Romeo Tonale, Cupra Born, Kia Sportage and the Mercedes T-Class were rated with five stars. BMW i4 and Toyota Aygo X achieved four stars.
Striking: The Cupra Born, one of the smallest vehicles in the test, achieved the best value for safety for adult occupants at 93 percent. Closely behind is the T-Class from Mercedes (91 percent), which also scores with the highest value for child safety (93 percent).
Different weaknesses
The two four-star cars showed very different weaknesses. “The BMW i4 is in the lead in almost all criteria. The fact that it still doesn’t get five stars is mainly due to the driving assistants,” explains Lang. “The car is quite extensively equipped – however, some systems, especially seat belt reminders on the rear seats and lane departure warning, do not work as satisfactorily as we would have liked.” The situation is somewhat different with the Toyota Aygo X, whose assistance systems are among the best in the test. “In return, there are deductions for occupant safety, both for adults and children.”
