The 70-year-old had a bad fall with his bike on the downhill section of the goods road. A flood diversion threshold was fatal for the 70-year-old from Peterskirchen, who was riding his e-bike on the sloping supply road, right at the entrance to the town. The man fell and was taken to the Ried hospital with serious injuries after first aid by the emergency doctor.
“Nothing should happen anymore”
The municipality of Tumeltsham reacted promptly – just one day later the threshold was milled off. “The accident is tragic, and nothing should happen again – there was imminent danger,” said Mayor Erwin Diermayr (VP) when asked by OÖN on Saturday. Therefore, the removal of the threshold was ordered a day later.
Threshold was controversial
The sill, which served as a drainage channel for the flood retention basin, was controversial, as Tumeltshamer reported to the Upper Austrian News. “In the beginning the snag was hardly marked, and we drove the car over it rather inelegantly the first time, even though we were relatively slow,” says a woman from Tumeltsham. For the cyclists, this threshold on the downhill section is “really dangerous”, says the woman from Tumeltsham.
Mayor Erwin Diermayr emphasized that the threshold was marked both by traffic signs and by signs on the roadside and by floor markings: “That was clearly visible!” The threshold was also officially approved as part of the flood protection measures. “We could have left it alone, but we immediately decided to defuse the area,” said the mayor. The drainage channel was intended to protect the houses below in heavy rain, so the accident was fatal and regrettable. The mayor resolutely rejects criticism that the rapid removal of the threshold is intended to “cover up something”. “It’s all about: nothing more should happen here!”
Long list of cycling accidents
The list of police reports over the past few days about accidents involving bicycle handlebars is long: “Cyclist fell after a wasp sting”, “Cyclist fell over an electric fence”, “Accident with an e-biker (93)”, “E-biker collided with a roebuck ‘, ‘E-bike handlebar fatally injured in collision’, ‘Cyclist seriously injured in fall’, ‘Cyclist given first aid by emergency doctor’, ‘Drunk cyclist injured in fall’, ‘Fallen bike handlebar had to be arrested’ – such an excerpt from the police reports of the past few days. Two e-bike riders have lost their lives in accidents in the past few days.
