The Gmunden mountain rescue service was alerted to the Traunstein late in the evening. Three climbers from Vienna got lost in the dark and couldn’t get any further at an altitude of 1380 meters. From 10:25 p.m., several emergency calls were received, after which lights could be seen in the upper area of the south-west wall.
In the meantime, one of the men had informed the mountain rescue service himself. Another went ahead and was able to reach the Naturfreundehütte am Traunstein. The innkeeper of the Gmundner Hütte, a member of the mountain rescue service, climbed down to the two other men and accompanied them back to the refuge.
A total of twelve mountain rescuers and two alpine police officers were on duty. The climbers, aged 31, 40 and 44, were unharmed.
