Instead of the usual preparatory games, the eight top clubs in the northern district of Gmunden played the Traunsee-Almtal Cup for the second time this year and delighted the football fans with exciting derbies and many goals.
The finals were played on Saturday as part of a football festival in the Robex Arena in Pettenbach. More than 500 spectators, including OÖFV President Gerhard Götschhofer and Gmunden Mayor Stefan Krapf, LAbg Michael Gruber and Deputy Mayor Sigrid Grubmair (both Pettenbach), were treated to a gripping final between the district league team ASKÖ Vorchdorf and the state league team SV Gmunder MIlch.
The audience got their money’s worth: defending champion Vorchdorf took the lead twice, but the people from Traunsee town still managed to take revenge for last year’s defeat in the final against the ambitious Vorchdorfer. Thanks to a brace from their Japanese new signing Koe Joshida and a goal from captain Dragan Calic, the Gmundners won 3-2 and were able to accept the trophy in the form of the Traunstein.
The other finals: The Union Pettenbach won the match for fifth place against SV Scharnstein 3:1. Likewise, in the duel between the regional league teams, SK Bad Wimsbach, beat promoted Gschwandt 5:2 and finished third.
