Yasmin Jessie Duarte, historical activist and assistant to Nelson Mandela, has died

Mandela made her a special assistant when he was released from prison in 1990, a position she held until he became president in 1994.

Duarte had been appointed general secretary of the ANC in May 2021, when the then-incumbent, Ace Magashule, was suspended pending trial on corruption charges.

However, months later he left that position to treat the cancer that finally caused his death.

Various South African political parties expressed their condolences and the memory of the struggles undertaken by Duarte in defense of the rights of Palestinians and the emancipation of women.

“Jessie Duarte’s sense of justice was keen, and her sympathy for the poor, the vulnerable, the destitute and the marginalized deep,” said the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.

“She took up her cause and stood by her principles, even when her stance drew criticism or personal attacks, she was a champion of the oppressed everywhere,” the president added, according to the News24 news portal.

Duarte’s remains were buried this Sunday, after a funeral following Muslim rites, in the Westpark cemetery in Johannesburg, according to the Europa Press news agency.
