Maritime police on a mission to Italy found two boats with 20 migrants on board in the southwest of the island of Sardinia as part of Frontex’s Themis operation.
The first vessel suspected of migrating was discovered last Friday while on patrol with 15 crew members on board, who, realizing the presence of the authorities, fled to the shore. The migrants landed in a hard-to-reach area, finding themselves in isolation.
The Portuguese police held the migrants at the scene until the arrival of the Financial Guard, who directed the boat to the port of Sant’Antioco. On another patrol on Saturday, NCIS intercepted another suspicious vessel with five crew members on board. Since June, the Maritime Police has been monitoring the maritime borders of Italy and the external borders of the European Union.
