Donald Trump’s first wife, Ivana Trump, died this Thursday at the age of 73 from injuries sustained in a fall, according to the former US president. “I am very sad to inform all those who loved her, and there are many, that Ivana Trump died at her home in New York,” Donald Trump said.
In a statement, the Trump family remembered Ivana as a woman who “fled communism and embraced the United States” and “who instilled in her children courage and resilience, compassion and determination.”
“Our mother was an incredible woman—strong in business, world class athlete, radiant beauty, caring mother and friend,” the Trump family said of Ivan, a “survivor” who is survived by three children and ten grandchildren.
Ivana and Donald, known in the 1980s as a powerhouse supremacy couple, built a large real estate empire. Together they managed to be in the spotlight in New York and were participants in the most popular parties and social events.
Ivana Trump, who has dual citizenship – Czech and American – helped her husband realize several projects, namely the famous Trump Tower in Manhattan and the Trump Taj Mahal resort and casino in Atlantic City, both in the United States.
Over the years, Ivana normalized her relationship with Donald Trump and, as she wrote in a 2017 book, they both spoke once a week.
Ivana told the New York Post in 2016, when Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, that she was both a supporter and adviser to her ex-husband. “I’m offering a few things” to Donald Trump, she told the paper. “We talk before and after his public appearances and he asks what I think.”
According to Ivana, her main advice was to Donald to “be calm”. “But Donald cannot remain calm (…) he is very frank, he says everything as it is,” Ivana also mentioned her ex-husband.
They divorced in 1992 after Trump had an affair with Marla Maples, whom he later married. The socialite became a global female icon when she divorced her husband after an infidelity scandal. Ivana even starred in the film “The First Wives Club” in 1996, where he responds to a group of divorced women: “Don’t be angry, take it all!”
Ivana and Donald had three children: Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric.
