A 19-year-old was convicted in the Graz criminal court on Monday because he wanted to obtain nude photos via Snapchat.

The defendant met the girls three years ago through Snapchat. Pictures were exchanged, including ones where the girls were only in their underwear or topless. But that wasn’t enough for the 19-year-old: he demanded that they send him nude photos, otherwise he would publish the underwear pictures. Later, according to the indictment, he only requested photos with pornographic depictions from those who were now over 14 years old.
“Did you know that these are young girls?” asked judge Kornelia Philipp. “No, I didn’t know that, we never talked about age,” said the accused. “Do you realize that this is a coercion?” the judge asked. “Now, not before,” said the apprentice sheepishly.
“Why do you do something like that at all?” the prosecutor wanted to know. “I don’t understand it myself,” came the reply. “Why weren’t you looking at legal pornography?” the judge asked a practical question. “I think so too now,” agreed the young man.
The judge and prosecutor rejected a diversion, but the sentence was rather mild at six months. “You don’t do something like that, but I don’t want to spoil your future either. You made a good impression today,” the judge explained her decision. Neither the accused nor the prosecutor made a statement, so the verdict is not final.
