How to deal with the heat in Linz

Experience has shown that temperatures around 35 degrees will feel a little hotter in the city. And since scientific studies have shown the connection between heat waves and increased mortality, preparation for them is good and important.

Find shade, drink a lot – this is one of the most effective measures against “heat damage” to your own body. Anyone who is out and about in the city can refresh themselves at one of the around 80 signposted drinking fountains, says Climate Councilor Eva Schobesberger about this service provided by the city.

How to avoid the heat:

  • Keep the living space cool
  • Close the windows during the day
  • Close blinds (ideally on the outside) or curtains or darken with blankets or towels, for example
  • Ventilate only at night and, if it is cool enough, in the morning hours.
  • Turn off light bulbs and unnecessary electrical appliances.
  • Avoid using the oven as much as possible.
  • Avoid exposure to heat if possible
  • Stay in cool or climate-controlled areas
  • If your home cannot be kept cool, you can go to a cool place (e.g. a climate-controlled public building or shopping center) for two to three hours a day.
  • Do not go outside at the hottest time of the day (for Linz, this is to be expected from around 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • Physically strenuous activities should be avoided or reduced as much as possible
  • Take regular breaks when working outside or, if possible, shift work to cooler parts of the day
  • Outdoor activities should be limited as much as possible
  • Stay in the shade
  • Take a cold shower or bath
  • Wear loose, light, light-colored clothing and a sun hat
  • Use light and thin bed linen/sheets, cushions are not recommended
  • Drink enough water before you feel thirsty, at least 1.5 to 3 liters daily (more may be needed for strenuous activities)
  • Eat small meals, but eat them more often
  • Food high in protein should be avoided
  • Easily digestible and low-fat foods with a high water content are recommended
