supermarkets turn off their signs for an energy sobriety plan

The President of France, Emmanuel Macronexplained on July 14, on the occasion of the National Holiday, that he was preparing an energy “sobriety plan” to deal with the eventual effects of the war in Ukraine and called for collective efforts.

The supermarket chains thus plan to turn off their banners “from the closing of the stores” and reduce the intensity of the lighting: by half in the sales area before the arrival of the public and by 30% during the “periods critics of consumption“.

Other measures proposed are “suspending the renewal of the air at night” and even lowering the temperature of the points of sale to 17ºC in autumn and winter, if requested by the regulatory authority in France.

In addition to Carrefour and Casino, among the groups that will apply the plan are AND.Leclerc, System OR, Them Musquetaires Intermarket, auchan, frankprix, monoprix, Lidl Y Picard.

Perifem also stresses that these measures will make it possible to reduce the energy bill of supermarkets and thus avoid “a too significant impact on prices for the consumers“.

The plan comes in a context of rising prices in France since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine at the end of February. However, supermarkets already had to reduce their energy consumption by 40% by 2030, under the law Elan of 2018.

The Minister of Energy Transition, Agnes Pannier-Runachercelebrated a “first stage” and assured that “it is about taking all the measures to overcome the winter, but also to reduce in a sustainable way” the emission of greenhouse gases.
