According to experts, around half of the territory of the European Union is currently threatened by extreme drought. The EU Commission on Monday published a report by its research center on the drought in July, according to which 46 percent of the EU area is at “risk” of drought. A further eleven percent of the area is already on alert due to a lack of rain, with consequences for vegetation and harvest.
“France, Romania, Spain, Portugal and Italy are likely to face a drop in crop yields,” the experts said. But Germany, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia are also “affected to a certain extent”. The northern Italian Po basin is therefore most affected by drought.
The brutal heat has also reached Great Britain: these days, temperatures are expected to rise to up to 41 degrees, significantly exceeding the record of 38.7 degrees from 2019. For large parts of England, the Met Office weather service has issued a “red warning” for the first time: “There is a risk to life and limb, even for healthy people,” it said.
