Wherever Jürgen shows up, things get heated. Yesterday, the extraordinary high commonly named hit western Austria. In Landeck in Tyrol, 31.4 degrees were measured at lunchtime, and the people of Vorarlberg were also allowed to sweat at similarly high temperatures at the same time. “Jürgen” has only announced himself in Upper Austria today – and will come to stay. At least until Sunday, not a day will go by without the 30-degree mark being exceeded.
The trend is not steady, but rapid: After today’s warm-up phase with up to 34 degrees, the heat wave will already reach its peak tomorrow. “It gets a bit warmer there, temperatures up to 36 degrees are possible,” says Alexander Ohms, meteorologist at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). Only on Thursday will the sun be temporarily pushed out of its place in the azure blue sky by the clouds – albeit with high summer temperatures of more than 30 degrees. Rain showers could then also bring cooling from above – but that is not certain. The Upper Austrians can also keep a cool head in the coming days without rain: simply dive under. Not permanently, but in one of the numerous lakes that are currently still offering pleasant temperatures.

Lake Hallstatt the coolest
Apart from flowing waters, the chances of a targeted drop in temperature are currently best in Lake Hallstatt. With a water temperature of 20 degrees, the strong sunlight can be endured. The Traunsee (21 degrees), the Mondsee (21 degrees) and the Offensee (22 degrees) also guarantee refreshment. For those who don’t want to go swimming in the heat, the OÖN have collected more tips.
