In June: Inflation reached its highest level in 47 years

Life in Austria became even more expensive in June. Renewed increases in the price of fuel, food, household energy and catering have pushed inflation up to 8.7 percent. This is the highest rate of inflation in 47 years. The price increase was also particularly noticeable for weekly purchases. The mini-shopping basket, which includes fuel alongside food and services, is up almost 19 percent year-on-year.

Diesel fuel has increased in price by around 65 percent compared to June 2021, and premium petrol by around 61 percent, according to data from Statistics Austria on Tuesday. The prices for heating oil have more than doubled in a year-on-year comparison, the working price for gas has risen by an average of 78 percent.

You also have to pay significantly more in the supermarket than you did a year ago. Food and non-alcoholic beverages increased in price by an average of 11 percent. Milk, cheese and eggs were on average 16 percent more expensive, and price pressure also increased for bread and cereal products (plus 11 percent), as did meat (plus 13 percent). On average, butter cost over a third (36 percent) more in June than a year ago.
