Linz lacks a lot to be a bicycle-friendly city

At the seven stops of this year’s “Radrettungs-Tour”, the Greens also took the opportunity to raise the mood of the cyclists. The result of the survey is sobering. More than 80 percent of those questioned are not very satisfied or not at all satisfied with the Linz cycle path network. For club chairman Helge Langer, this is a clear sign that “Linz is still a long way from being a bike-friendly city”.

Wider cycle paths, better signage, additional bicycle racks: these are three specific wishes from cyclists, who generally criticize that they are given too little space. And three out of four respondents were of the opinion that the status of cycling is rather poor compared to other road users.

The city of Linz would have to react to this with a “modern mobility policy” and “not give the car unrestricted priority on almost every street and every intersection”. After all, according to Langer, more and more people would switch to cycling. The trend is towards e-bikes, trailer bikes and parent-child tandems. The latter also explains the demand for wider cycle paths.

And which is not surprising: those surveyed did not see the network of cycle paths in Linz as child-friendly. The fact that today’s children are tomorrow’s everyday cyclists is not yet taken into account. A core sentence for the quality of a city’s cycle paths fits in with this: “If you let your children cycle alone in the city, then the cycle infrastructure is excellent.” Linz is still a long way from that, the survey also shows.
