Monaco’s Prince Albert II and Charlene with Pope Francis

Francis gave the two a bronze figure depicting a little boy helping another child up, the Vatican said after the meeting. When handing it over, the 85-year-old emphasized that this is the only moment when you can look down on a person: when you help them up.

The Monegasque royal couple brought the Pope a print of the chapel of the palace in Monaco. The princely couple last visited the Vatican together in 2016. The Prince of Monaco and the South African former professional swimmer have been married since 2011 and have two children.

The Holy See and the Principality of Monaco maintain full diplomatic relations. Over 80 percent of Monaco’s 39,000 residents are Catholic. The Archdiocese of Monaco has existed since 1981 and has been headed by Archbishop Dominique-Marie David since 2020.
