Civil Protection Commander André Fernandes assessed the fires engulfing Portugal in the early hours of Saturday evening and found that “the situation is most alarming” in Chavez and that “1,294 operatives are involved in several incidents throughout the country.”
Reinforcements were announced for 111 additional operatives to fight the flames.
“854 people have already been evacuated from their homes,” said Andre Fernandez, who mourned the death of pilot Andre Serra in Fos Coa. 197 people have already been affected by the fires in Portugal until this Saturday.
The Commander highlighted other areas of concern to the authorities: Vila Real and Celorico de Basto.
“Now there is no way [de trânsito] affected. We keep the main routes in Portugal in working condition,” he assured.
