78 years ago today, the Stauffenberg assassination attempt failed

On the 78th anniversary of the failed assassination attempt, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz paid tribute to the resistance against the Nazi regime. The women and men around Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg had risked their lives to overthrow Hitler’s regime, the SPD politician wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “Your sacrifice obliges us to always stand up for democracy,” warned the Chancellor.

Goal: end of the war

On July 20, 1944, Wehrmacht officers around Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg tried in vain to kill Hitler with a bomb and end the war. The bomb exploded in the room Hitler was in, but the dictator was only injured because he happened to be protected by a heavy table. The coup attempt failed. Stauffenberg and three co-conspirators were shot dead on the evening of the assassination in the inner courtyard of the Bendler Block in Berlin. In the weeks and months that followed, the Nazis executed around 90 other participants and supporters.

On Wednesday afternoon, personalities from politics and society will lay wreaths at the Plötzensee Memorial in Berlin. Representatives of the Federal Government and the Berlin Senate will give speeches. In the evening, around 400 recruits from the German Bundeswehr are to make their solemn vows at the Bendlerblock.
