In the first quarter of 2022Chinese regulators gave the green light to the creation of coal plants with a total capacity of 8.63 gigawatts, according to research by Greenpeace.

This figure represents nearly half of all coal production capacity approved last year, according to environmental advocates.

Electricity consumption has skyrocketed this summer as China suffers from an intense heat wave.

China relies on coal for 60% of its electricity, and has asked miners to increase capacity by 300 million tons this year.

Global commitment against climate change

US President Joe Biden will announce a series of measures to combat the scenario in a speech on Wednesday, according to a White House official.

The President, speaking from a former coal-fired power plant in Massachusetts, will make it clear that time is running out to deal with the “existential threat” of global warming in the US and around the worldthe official said, on condition of anonymity.
