Extreme heat wave leaves more than 500 dead in Spain

“I ask the citizens to let’s take our precautions“, added the president. In addition, he emphasized the climate emergency: “climate change kills.”

The number of deaths that Sánchez cited is a reference to the estimates made by the Carlos III Public Institutewhich makes a statistical calculation of the increase in mortality caused by precise causes such as rising temperaturescomparing these figures with the historical statistical series.

However, the institute qualified these figures in recent days and stressed that it was a statistical estimate and not a record of official deaths.

Why did the heat wave start?

According to World Meteorological Organization (IOM), the heat wave originated in the north of Africa at the beginning of the month and gradually rose towards Europe.

The meteorologist Scott Duncan explained in the British chain BBC that “the wave is a result of warming caused by boreal summer temperatures in the Sahara Desertwhich coincided with an Atlantic low-pressure system between the Azores islands Y Madeira.

“The low pressure axis near Portugal acts as an engine to lift heat north,” he said.
