Sunak has led every round of the vote among Conservative lawmakers, but it is Truss who so far appears to have the upper hand among the roughly 200,000 ruling party members who will ultimately pick the winner.
The final stretch of a fight that will last weeks will face Sunak, a former banker from Goldman Sachs which has raised the tax pressure to the highest level since the 1950s, with Truss, a convert to Brexit what has promised cut taxes and regulation.

Eleven candidates originally stood, but in a fifth and final vote by Conservative lawmakers, junior trade minister Penny Mordaunt Was eliminated. Sunak received 137 of the 357 votes, to Truss’s 113 and Mordaunt’s 105.
Polls indicate that the British chancellor would beat the former minister in the contest between the party’s militants, but everything could change when the two finalists begin weeks of electoral campaign throughout the United Kingdom.
Truss thanked her supporters. “I am prepared to strike from day one,” he said on Twitter.
Sunak, also on Twitter, posted: “Grateful that my colleagues have placed their trust in me today. I will work day and night to carry our message across the country.”
