1,470 Covid patients in the hospital, 80 in intensive care units

Within a week, nine Covid patients were added to the intensive care units. Overall, however, the total number of hospitalized corona infected people has fallen by 34 since Wednesday. 14,070 new corona infections were registered in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Health.

The reported new infections were above the average of the past seven days (11,915). The seven-day incidence (new infections in the past seven days, note) per 100,000 inhabitants was 928.8 on Thursday. Sixteen more deaths related to SARS-CoV-2 have been added within a day. 71 deaths have been registered in the past seven days. Overall, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed at least 18,987 lives in Austria since it broke out.

Vienna with highest incidence

The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Vienna with 1,308.2, followed by Lower Austria, Burgenland and Salzburg (994, 884 and 835.6 respectively). This is followed by Vorarlberg (829.2), Upper Austria (828.3), Styria (725.4), Carinthia (690.8) and Tyrol (670.2). These figures should be treated with caution, as far more tests are carried out in Vienna than in other federal states and the actual conditions are unlikely to be reflected in the statistics.

The number of new infections says “little” at the moment, complexity researcher Peter Klimek from MedUni Vienna also told the daily newspaper “Österreich” (Thursday edition). People would test themselves less, the number of unreported cases was high. The “most important point of reference are the hospitals,” emphasized Klimek. In the past 20 days, the seven-day incidence in Vienna – at a high level – has hardly changed. But in the hospital recordings you can see “a very clear increase,” explained Klimek. The day before, the Covid forecasting consortium, to which Klimek belongs, had already recommended focusing less on the daily number of infections and more on the utilization of the hospitals with Covid patients.

“Stable situation”

For Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens), the corona situation is “stable”, as he emphasized in an interview with ORF Vorarlberg. “We now have a development that is roughly constant at 10,000 to 12,000 new infections per day,” he said. The minister expects a “significant autumn wave”, but “not a very dramatic situation”. What worries him more “is that this Covid wave could combine with an influenza wave in the fall”.

On Thursday, 128,675 officially confirmed active cases were reported in Austria, 3,174 more than on Wednesday. Since the beginning of the pandemic there have already been 4,658,125 confirmed cases in Austria. 4,510,463 people have recovered since the outbreak, and 10,880 have recovered within the past 24 hours.

Positive rate at 16.8 percent

A total of 101,328 rapid PCR and antigen tests have been registered in the past 24 hours. Of these, 83,635 were meaningful PCR tests. The positive rate of the PCR tests was 16.8 percent. This 24-hour value is well above the average for the past week, when an average of 11.7 percent of the PCR tests are positive).

Vaccination is still a marginal phenomenon. A total of 3,516 vaccinations were carried out on Wednesday. Of these, 134 were first stitches, 1,698 second stitches and 3,046 third stitches.
