Expert: Book for basic digital education “full of mistakes”

An expert discovered numerous errors in the textbook “networked”, which is intended to serve as the basis for the lesson. It was not until the end of May that the timetable presented at the time for the subject, which will be introduced as a compulsory subject in the first to third grades of elementary school and in the lower grades from September, was heavily criticized.

In a post on the social media platform Twitter, IT expert Martin Leyrer pointed out errors that he found in the book. He cited numerous examples: For example, “networked” says that the Briton Alan Turing developed the Turing machine in 1936 and that it essentially worked like today’s computers.

In fact, it is a mathematical model and not a physical device. Furthermore, the “World Wide Web” developed in 1989 is named as the origin of the Internet. Its beginnings actually lie in the Arpanet, to which university mainframes were connected in 1969.

Book is in revision

“The textbook reflects the importance of IT training in Austria,” said Leyrer in an interview with the Internet portal Futurezone. Errors such as equating the World Wide Web with the Internet are common in everyday life, but they are not appropriate in a textbook with didactic and technical requirements.

The book is already being revised, says Maximilian Schulyok, Managing Director of the Bundesverlag. “The current book is based on the old timetable, from 2023 a new one will apply, to which ‘networked’ will have to be adapted anyway. We will of course respond to the feedback and correct the errors,” says Schulyok.

Ministry of Education is investigating the case

The e-book version will be adjusted by September so that a correct version is available to students and teachers. A sheet is inserted into the books that have already been printed, pointing out the errors. The updated version for the new curriculum will then be available for the start of school in 2023.

Since the book for the “School Book Campaign” was approved by a committee of experts, the Ministry of Education is now also examining the case. A broadcast states that discussions are being held with the publisher.
