It is estimated that dozens of tons of dead fish would have to be recovered from the river, said a police spokeswoman in Breclav, around 230 kilometers south-east of Prague, according to the CTK agency on Thursday. In addition to fishermen, firefighters are also involved in the work, which is expected to last at least a week.
According to experts, the reason for the mass extinction is a lack of oxygen in the water due to a mass proliferation of so-called blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. The persistent heat favors their growth. Among the fish that died are carp, zander and catfish.
The water temperature in the river at a measuring station in Breclav is currently reaching temperatures of more than 24 degrees Celsius during the day. The Thaya – called Dyje in Czech – is a tributary of the Morava and runs to a large extent near the state border between the Czech Republic and Austria.
