People with disabilities move into the center of society on the Tabor

Since mid-December of the previous year, ten residents of the Volkshilfe lebensART residential association in Tabor have been living in the new buildings on Roosevelt-Strasse. At the beginning of March, 21 residents followed in the neighboring pro-mente Upper Austria residential building. Both inclusion projects are about bringing people with disabilities from the fringes of society to the center of community life. Both houses were officially opened this week.

“We are rethinking inclusion and, with key projects, like here in Steyr, are moving people with disabilities into the center of society,” said Social Provincial Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer at the opening. Accompanied or supervised living spaces for people with disabilities have been created right next to classic rental and owner-occupied apartments.

New projects in the pipeline

The mayor of Steyr, Markus Vogl, was also impressed by the projects: “It takes exactly such targeted offers to let the residents live their lives. I am therefore really happy about these projects and also proud – of what has been achieved here in Steyr and to the fact that other great projects are already in the pipeline.”

“Two hearts beat in my chest during this appointment. That of the vice mayor responsible for social affairs and that of the chairman of the Volkshilfe Oberösterreich. And both hearts beat loudly and happily,” said Michael Schodermayr.

“Housing is a basic need. I would like to thank everyone who makes it possible for people to live here, especially the employees and politicians for their support,” said Monika Czamler, President of pro mente Upper Austria: “Other pro mente too Facilities supported us in the move.” The furniture was also made by clients from other locations. She is proud of the active community and good neighborhood.
