55-year-old wanted to help and was hit by trucks on A1

The 55-year-old from the Grieskirchen district survived with serious injuries. Overall, the accident called for five injuries, five vehicles were involved, the police reported on Friday.

The serious accident happened on Thursday evening during a strong thunderstorm. A German car was driving on the A1 near Berg im Attergau in the direction of Vienna when it skidded around 9:20 p.m. due to aquaplaning. The vehicle stayed on its roof. The three occupants, a 28-year-old driver, a woman and a man, were able to climb out of the wreck themselves.

Behind them was a pickup truck that pulled over just in time. A subsequent driver stopped with his articulated lorry at the breakdown lane. Likewise the 55-year-old driver. The two went to the wreckage lying on the roof and wanted to help. A dangerous situation that ended in a serious accident.

Reached for a cigarette

The Hausruckviertlerin was hit by a following German trailer. According to his own statements, the driver – also 55 years old – was just grabbing a pack of cigarettes and was therefore distracted. There was a collision with the small truck, which in turn was pushed forward together with the car lying on the roof. The trailer hurled past the vehicles in an uncontrolled manner and pushed the woman to the ground.

Finally, the truck crashed into the car and the semitrailer at the breakdown lane. The voluntary fire brigades of St. Georgen am Attersee and Attersee were busy cleaning up and salvaging until midnight.
