On Thursday morning, a torn piece of metal set fire to an MBTA Orange Line train on the Mystic River Bridge in Boston, USA, forcing about 200 passengers to leave the train.
According to the MBTA, flames and smoke began to emanate from the first car of the convoy around 6:45 am when it was on the bridge towards Montage Station in Somerville.
Power went out between Assembly and Wellington stations as passengers tried to get out of the car through the windows.
At the moment of distress, the passenger jumped off the bridge into the Mystic River. “Public security officials caught a man who jumped into the water after getting off the train. The person refused medical attention,” the MBTA said in a statement. CBS News.
MBTA director Steve Poftak said it appeared that a piece of metal from the bottom of the train broke off and hit the train’s third rail, causing a fire.
No injuries were reported.
