OUR BBC will pay compensation to the former nanny of Princes William and Harry for the defamation used to obtain an interview with Princess Diana in 1995, where he says – as is known today – “there were three of us at this wedding. It was a little tight.” The company will pay the former nanny a large settlement and legal costs, but the amount was not disclosed.
Alexandra Pettifer, known as Tiggy, has received an apology from the Supreme Court for baseless allegations that she had an affair with Prince Charles and an alleged miscarriage. His prosecution stated that the false accusations caused “serious personal consequences”.
However, evidence has been unearthed that journalist Martin Bashir used false documents to gain Diana’s trust and obtain a controversial interview.
Viewed by 22.8 million people in the UK and broadcast three years after Prince Charles and Diana’s split, the interview was described by commentators at the time as a “bombshell” that shattered the image of “happy, considerate and united”.
OUR BBC said on Thursday that she is “extremely sorry for the severe and lasting damage” caused to Pettifer and his family after the interview was aired.
In a statement read in court, the nanny’s lawyer, Louise Prince, said the allegations were “very serious and completely unfounded. These accusations were fabricated.” As part of the declaration BBC said he fully agreed that the claims made about the former nanny “were completely unfounded, should never have been made and that the BBC did not conduct a proper investigation at the time”, as the interview was obtained.
After the court session, the CEO BBC Tim Davy said the company apologized to Pettifer, Prince of Wales, and Princes William and Harry “for how Princess Diana was deceived and for the impact” the interview had on their lives. He added: “Now that we know the shocking manner in which the interview was received, I have decided that the BBC will never air this interview again.”
