Some of the rescued migrants arrived in Sicily and some in Calabria on Sunday. They included 30 unaccompanied minors. Previously, the coast guard had rescued other migrants who were on unseaworthy boats in Italian waters with the Italian naval ship “Diciotti”.

The rescue ship “Ocean Viking” brought an overcrowded inflatable boat in distress with 87 people on board to safety, which was drifting in international waters off Libya. There were also several unaccompanied minors on board. Neither of them had a life jacket. The survivors are now being cared for by the Red Cross and SOS Mediterranee teams. SOS Mediterranee operates the “Ocean Viking”.

15 landings with a total of 411 migrants were reported on Sunday night on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa. The hotspot with 1,184 guests is about to collapse. Several migrants had been rescued by the coast guard in the past few days or had reached the island directly in small boats.

34,013 migrants have reached the southern Italian coast since the beginning of 2022. In the same period in 2022, there were 25,552, according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior in Rome.
