According to a survey by the opinion research institute OGM, you have to pay between an average of 8.85 euros in the Jennersdorf district and 16.65 euros in the Dornbirn district for a Wiener Schnitzel with a side dish. The greater importance of tourism in the west is primarily responsible for the west-east gap in schnitzel prices, which also raises the price level for locals.
1,300 schnitzel prices compared
The high price level also puts the higher incomes in the Ländle into perspective: the average net annual income in the Dornbirn district is 25,700 euros, 14 percent higher than in Jennersdorf at 22,600 euros, but based on the regional price level, Jennersdorfers can afford more schnitzel than Dornbirners, it said it from OGM to APA.
From May to June 2022, OGM drew representative random samples from catering establishments (no canteens) in all districts of Austria and recorded a total of 20,000 catering prizes, including 1,300 schnitzel prizes. A comparison with the year 2021 was not made. According to Statistics Austria, the currently high inflation has increased the price for breaded schnitzel in June by almost 11 percent compared to June 2021.
On average 12.46 euros
According to the OGM, the schnitzel comes to 12.46 euros on average across Austria. It is relatively cheap at an average of 12.10 euros in the federal capital Vienna. A larger range of restaurants and offers for students made the prices in the cities lower than in the country, said Johannes Klotz from OGM. In Graz, a schnitzel costs 11.20 euros on average, in Klagenfurt it is 11.90 euros.
The most expensive schnitzel are eaten in Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg, with OGM identifying the districts of Dornbirn (EUR 16.65), Bludenz (EUR 16) and Schwaz (EUR 15.50) as the front runners. The cheapest pork or chicken schnitzel with a side dish is in Jennersdorf in Burgenland (8.85 euros), in Eisenstadt (9.20 euros) and in Güssing (9.40 euros).
