Corona restrictions: crime in neighboring Bavaria has fallen

The security report for the neighboring district of Passau, which has a population of just under 200,000, shows that the “overall crime rate” is declining: last year the number of crimes fell by 9.2 percent, but police experts are overly optimistic. The corona pandemic with its restrictions is likely to have played a role in the decline in crime, and the lifting of many restrictions could be reflected in an increase in the number of crimes this year, according to the police.

In the previous year, the number of criminal offenses recorded in the district of Passau fell by 424 crimes to a total of 4,177 cases, according to police chief Manfred Jahn.

The recorded crimes per 100,000 inhabitants would be 2159. This corresponds to a year-on-year decrease of 9.6 percent.

The clearance rate in the district of Passau increased by 0.9 percent to 75.9 percent. This is well above the Bavarian average of 66.9 percent.

Violent crime fell by 49 to a total of 119 crimes, street crime fell by 63 cases to 529 crimes, and theft fell by 142 cases to 745 crimes. According to the police, the number of cases of violent, street and theft crime is at its lowest level in the past ten years.

However, a clear increase was registered in the area of burglaries. While the number in 2020 was 15 cases, it was 37 offenses last year. The number of drug offenses discovered has also risen: in the previous year there was an increase of 56 to 434 cases.

The total number of traffic accidents increased by 9.96 percent to 5798 accidents, the number of traffic fatalities has happily dropped from eleven to six. The main reasons for serious accidents were alcohol and excessive speed.

More attention will be paid to this aspect. “For our colleagues, this is also one of the main tasks in the transport sector this year,” said Police Commissioner Manfred Jahn, who emphasized during a security talk that this year, in addition to ensuring the objective security situation, strengthening the population’s sense of security is a central task of the police will.

District Administrator Raimund Kneidinger describes people’s subjective sense of security as “absolutely characteristic of the quality of life in a region”. The historically low level of violent, street and theft crime is particularly pleasing.
