A fatal accident occurred on a level crossing in Stölzles in the municipality of Hirschbach (district of Gmünd) late Monday morning. A car with an 80-year-old woman at the wheel had collided with a passenger train, police and fire departments reported. There was no more help for the driver from the Gmünd district.
Despite the red light, the woman drove the car onto the level crossing, said the Lower Austria state police department. A collision with the passenger train was the result, despite emergency braking by the 50-year-old engine driver. The car was dragged 540 meters.
According to the police, 28 passengers on the train on the Franz-Josephs-Bahn route were unharmed. They were brought to the Pürbach train station by helpers from the fire brigade using shuttle services. The 80-year-old was alone in her car.
