Because she is said to have kept dogs under unworthy conditions and sold them illegally, a defendant had to answer to the Korneuburg regional court yesterday. The 31-year-old was sentenced to 21 months in prison, seven of which were unconditional, for animal cruelty and commercial fraud. Her partner was finally acquitted. Two other suspects failed to show up.
The indictment included four Serbian citizens – in addition to the woman and three men. The 31-year-old is said to have appeared externally as a breeder, while the other accused are said to have supported her in mediating and selling the dogs.
In total there were 16 puppies – Rottweilers, huskies and a husky mother who died due to injuries. According to the police, in Zemling (district Hollabrunn) several animals were kept under terrible conditions in an old press house with a cellar tube. Similar conditions are said to have prevailed in the woman’s house in Strasshof, where dogs were also locked up. The goal must always have been the illegal breeding of puppies or their resale. The two locations in Lower Austria may have been used as intermediate stations. When selling, it is said that the animals were pretended to come from proper breeding.
