Green youth calls for action on street names

With a social media video, the Green Youth Linz makes the street names in Linz a topic again. The focus of the criticism is “that dozens of streets in Linz are named after followers and system winners of the Nazi regime”. According to the tenor of Alina Ratzenböck and Tomislav Pilipovic, these should finally be banned from the streets of Linz and replaced by deserving women’s names.

The suggestions range from Maria Schwarz-Schlöglmann (co-founder of the Violence Protection Center Upper Austria) to politicians like Edith Dobesberger. The Green Youth didn’t want to wait any longer for the results of the evaluation of Linz’s street names by a commission of historians, they want to “put the city government with proposals right now.”

“Need scientifically sound results”

As reported, the report on the historical background of the namesake of the streets of Linz has been delayed due to the pandemic and is now expected for the end of November. On the basis of this and thus on scientifically sound results, decisions are made about the consequences in public space in the city of Linz, says Mayor Klaus Luger (SP). It is undisputed that the events during the National Socialist period and the names associated with them must be dealt with.

Of the 1,158 streets in Linz, around 560 are named after people, most of them men. In this context, Luger emphasizes that for years it has been important to him that women are also considered when naming traffic areas, and that there is a continuous increase in female street names.
