The great heat is over for the time being

Coming from the northwest, it moved across the Innviertel in the direction of the central area and yesterday morning caused the temperatures throughout Upper Austria to cool down noticeably – the Atlantic cold front, the combination of which with the sweltering heat on Tuesday night also triggered severe thunderstorms in Upper Austria and led to a number of fire brigade operations has pulled.

Foothills of the Atlantic air are also responsible for “the fact that the heat wave is over for the time being,” says Christian Ortner, meteorologist at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). Although the temperatures today, Wednesday and Thursday “would rise again moderately, we will probably not reach the 30-degree mark in Upper Austria this week.”

For hikes or excursions into the woods to look for mushrooms, the next few warm summer days with maximum temperatures of 26 to 28 degrees are ideal. And the fact that, thanks to the Atlantic air, the tropical nights are over, relieves the human organism in a pleasant way, says Ortner. We speak of tropical nights when the temperatures do not fall below the 20 degree mark. And hot days count as summer days when at least 30 degrees are measured.

With moderate wind, daily highs of 28 degrees are expected by Thursday, and a thunderstorm front with rain showers is likely to set in on Friday afternoon. “Really heavy thunderstorms are not to be expected in Upper Austria.” For Saturday, the meteorologist expects “that the rain showers will spread across the country”.

Next heat wave from August 3rd?

At the same time, the maximum daily temperatures would drop to 24 degrees. And even if Sunday is likely to remain largely rain-free, it will not get noticeably warmer again until Monday next week.

And from Wednesday, August 3, there are some indications that the next heat wave could build up in Upper Austria with values of 30 degrees and more. “We’re heading towards hot summer days. The only question is how many there will be in the end,” says meteorologist Ortner.
