According to Mirror, the cat attacked José’s leg but was distracted by the young man’s boot, giving him time to escape. A spokesman for the zoo said the boy was in stable condition, with only his legs and feet injured.

Following the accident, Leon Zoo released a statement tightening safety regulations in space. “It is important to note that there are plates exposed [aconselhando os visitantes] not to breach security barriers, but to protect the integrity and safety of our visitors, as well as zoo animals,” a spokesperson for the site wrote.

Leon Zoo has been open since 1979 and is home to over a thousand animals of 180 species.
