He wanted to keep it short, said Gerhard Poglits when he was presented with the award for “Volunteer of the Year” in the Linz district in September last year. Moments later, the section leader of the ASKÖ Neue Heimat then launched into an incendiary speech. He doesn’t want to watch children and young people turn away from the clubs and towards the screens. He wants to fight against that. A goal pursued by all 16 volunteers who received the recognition they deserved in the last election.
Nominate your heroes
From today on, Upper Austria’s volunteers will once again be brought in front of the curtain. More than 200,000 are involved in sports clubs.
They are usually not in the first row there. But the threads that they pull in the background hold the club network together. Many of them have earned the title of “Volunteer of the Year”. You decide who will be awarded this title in the fall. For the fourth time, Sportland Oberösterreich, together with OÖ Nachrichten, Tips, Life Radio and TV1, are calling for nominations.
You can nominate your favorites for the election at nachrichten.at/ehrenamt until August 26th.
Simply fill out the online form and upload a photo of your secret hero and a short description. Last year’s winners are excluded from taking part again. From August 31st you can vote daily until September 25th. The winners will finally be chosen on October 5th in Linz. Great prizes are waiting for them again this year: Each district winner receives 1000 euros. Another 250, 500 and 1000 euros are waiting for the three state winners, who will be chosen from the 16 district winners.
“The good souls of sport usually don’t get the platform they deserve. So I’m pleased that we can now bring them back in front of the curtain,” says Sports Councilor Markus Achleitner (VP).
