Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet on August 5 in the Russian city of Sochi to discuss the situation in Ukraine and grain exports from the war-torn country.
The meeting was confirmed on Tuesday by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, adding that the talks would continue throughout the day, TASS reported.
The Turkish Presidency confirmed that bilateral and regional issues will be high on the agenda. The two leaders met exactly one week ago in Tehran, the capital of Iran, where they were received by their colleague and host, Ebrahim Raisi.
Putin and Erdogan have also been in contact by phone several times in recent months. The Turkish leader visited Russia in September 2021, when he also met with the Russian head of state in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Last week, Russia and Ukraine reached an agreement on grain exports with Turkey’s support to minimize the declared food crisis caused by the conflict and after the Russian military invasion on February 24th.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky predicts that about 20 million tons of the 2021 crop will be exported, while the 2022 crop is still waiting to be sold. In his calculations, he indicated that Ukraine has grain worth almost ten billion euros.
Turkey, which does not adhere to Western sanctions against Russia, maintains a “neutral” position in the Ukrainian conflict, which is justified by close economic ties with Moscow and good relations with Kyiv, to which it has been supplying combat drones for several years.
