Previously, anyone who drove to Dubrovnik by car had to pass through two border posts in Bosnia-Herzegovina on the ten-kilometer route. To avoid that, Croatia built the new bridge. The cable-stayed bridge connects the Croatian mainland with the Peljesac peninsula in the south over a length of 2.4 kilometers. This means that the country’s most important tourist attraction, the medieval fortress city of Dubrovnik, will be easier to reach in the future.
The bells of all churches in the Dubrovnik Diocese also rang on Wednesday night to open the largest sea bridge in Croatia, which now connects southern Dalmatia with the rest of the country via the Peljesac peninsula, as reported by the Catholic news agency IKA.

During the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic spoke of the realization of a “Croatian dream” with a view to the completion of the infrastructure project, which was largely financed by EU funds. As part of the all-day celebrations, Bishop Glasnovic officially blessed the bridge structure on Tuesday evening at the eastern bridgehead.
In a short speech, the bishop also expressed his joy at the new bridge. “Everywhere we go, we encounter bridges as an eternal, insatiable human need to connect,” Glasnovic said. And everything that leads to the mutual connection of people also corresponds to the will of God.
Built by Chinese companies
The bridge was built by China. China Road and Bridge Corporation won the international tender for the project in 2018.
