How this should work in concrete terms will be worked out over the summer, and it will then take effect from autumn, it said on Wednesday after the summer council of ministers in Mauerbach, Lower Austria. The proposals by WIFO Director Gabriel Felbermayr should serve as a basis.
Unbureaucratic and uniform
The “electricity price brake” planned by the government is intended to ensure the basic supply of energy at a secure, cheaper price at pre-war levels for every household. This should be done “as unbureaucratically as possible” and be uniform nationwide. In the medium term, the government is hoping for inflation-dampening effects. Felbermayr’s proposal is currently being discussed “intensively” in the responsible departments, according to Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) after the Summer Council of Ministers.
Working group on reducing energy consumption
The federal government itself also wants to set a good example, as it is the largest property owner in Austria. For this reason, the government is setting up an interministerial working group to develop measures to reduce energy consumption and a phase-out path from fossil fuels for heat supply. Ventilation, cooling, heating and other devices that consume energy are also optimized.
